Packing is perhaps the hardest thing about preparing for your cruise. Keep in mind that casual on a usual cruise means capris, jeans, khakis, with polo shirts, t-shirts, or tops. Shorts are not allowed in the dining room- they are only appropriate on the pool deck, spa, and gym. You can also stretch it by wearing them at the Lido deck lunch buffet. 
Pack your most comfortable pair of shoes, in case f shore excursions. For all the walking you’ll do on the ship, comfortable shoes will be more valued than stylish shoes. Remember to bring a swimsuit, for the water slide and pool! On CCL/RC/NCL (and the like) formals night, few people actually wear tuxedos and ball gowns. Women who have a very nice pair of slacks can get away with matching them to a nice blouse for formal night. In case your ‘casual’ shoes don’t match/ look nice with your formal outfit, pack an extra pair of nice shoes. There are laundry mats on the ship, usually, if you do run out of cloths. Detergents and fabric softeners are also available in vending-like machines, or there is a small clothesline in the shower where you could rinse and hang clothes if you ran out of clean ones. Lastly, don’t forget to pack sleepwear! If you need them, also pack makeup, hair dryer, curling/flattening irons. Pack hygiene care things like hairbrush, deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste, razor, feminine needs, and shampoo/conditioner. Instead of paragrpaing everything, here’s a nice little (HA!) list:
